Vidal-Fleury - Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2017
Overview
Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury not only is the Rhône’s oldest continuing grower/négociant firm, but it also secured an international following very quickly.Thomas Jefferson's visit in 1787 was its first contact with the United States; he called the wines “ justly celebrated”. The elaboration of Vidal-Fleury’s wines consists of four separate operations - the vineyard, winemaking, ageing and bottling. The superb origins of the grapes and the patience taken in maturing are what make the quality of Vidal-Fleury wines according to Winemaker Antoine Dupre Terroir: This wine comes from vines located to the south of the appellation, on the terroirs of Chassis, and to the north, on the granite terraces above Gervans. The grapes are cultivated in soils of pebbles and rolled stones, which are highly draining. The climate is more influenced by the Mediterranean, with the mistral wind present and relatively mild temperatures. Vinification:Manual harvesting, total destemming, and fermentation in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature. The maceration period lasts for 3 weeks. After racking, the wine is then aged in stainless steel tanks for 90% of the batch and in wood for 10% (oak barrels and demi-muids) for 12 months.Additional Details

"Fairly bursting with blueberries and raspberries, the 2017 Crozes Hermitage is a medium-bodied, lush, easy-drinking Syrah to gulp down over the next several years. There's just enough of a tannic backbone to think it will be adequate with grilled burgers but enough suppleness that you can happily drink it on its own."
