Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2020

Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury not only is the Rhône’s oldest continuing grower/négociant firm, but it also secured an international following very quickly.Thomas Jefferson’s visit in 1787 was its first contact with the United States; he called the wines “ justly celebrated”.

The elaboration of Vidal-Fleury’s wines consists of four separate operations – the vineyard, winemaking, ageing and bottling. The superb origins of the grapes and the patience taken in maturing are what make the quality of Vidal-Fleury wines according to Winemaker Antoine Dupre

Terroir: Our Châteauneuf is produced from old vines cultivated to the east of the appellation, in the La Crau terroir characterized by clayey soils covered with pebbles and rolled stones. The climate is Mediterranean, influenced by the mistral wind.

Vinification: The winemaking process includes destemmed harvesting, alcoholic fermentation under controlled temperature, three to four weeks of maceration, and post-fermentation maceration at a warm temperature. The entire batch is aged for two years in oak vats.

Additional Information

Dark ruby red color. An intense nose expressing black fruits, blackcurrant, blackberry, enhanced by notes of the Mediterranean scrubland. The palate is powerful and rich. The right and round balance tempers broad tannins and a structured framework. The finish is refined with beautiful woody notes.

Pairing: Ideal to pair with a game terrine, a Provençal daube served with ratatouille, a capon stuffed with chestnuts, or even a leg of lamb. It can also accompany characterful soft-textured cheeses like Saint-Félicien.

About the Vintage: The 2020 vintage was characterized by a particularly mild and sunny spring and summer. The combined effect of daytime warmth and consistently cool nights allowed the vine to flourish fully until harvest time. Harvesting was early and proceeded perfectly.
