Stéphane Aviron - Morgon Côte du Py 2016
Overview
Terroir: The Morgon Côte du Py is Stéphane Aviron’s most structured, earthy wine, that is drinkable now and can age wonderfully for as much as ten years. The grapes are sourced from the slopes of an 1150-foot inactive volcano that is regarded as one of the top terroirs in all of Beaujolais. Vines face due south on a well-pitched hillside of volcanic soils with schist and blue stone.
Vinification: Grapes are vinified separately until time for the final blending and bottling. Whole bunches are fermented and then macerated in temperature controlled stainless steel vats for ten days. The wine is aged for 12 months in neutral Burgundy barriques, 228-liter barrels, that are between three and seven years old, to not add any oak characteristics and retain the bright fruit.
Additional Details
Stephane Aviron’s Morgon Cote du Py is Burgundy in every way, witha striking resemblance to a 1er Cru Pinot Noir from the Cote de Nuits. This wine is sim-ply exceptional! The nose is elegant and layered with notes of earth and berry. The wine is rich and very structured with a healthy dose of crushed berry fruit leading to a firm, well structured finish.Technical Details

"Deep vivid ruby. Black raspberry, cherry and violet aromas, along with suggestions of smoky minerals, baking spices and licorice. Concentrated yet lively and precise, offering bitter cherry, blue fruit and floral pastille flavors enlivened by a snap of juicy acidity. Turns sweeter on the long, penetrating, floral-driven finish, where slow-building tannins lend shape and gentle grip."

"Offering up aromas of cassis, dark cherries, pencil lead and baking chocolate, the 2016 Morgon Côte du Py Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and firm, with a chewy finish that will demand some patience. It's a sterner, more structural wine than the version from Jean-Marc Burgaud, who is Aviron's source for this bottling."

Morgon, along with Moulin--Vent, are the two cru that produce the sturdiest wines that often need several years of bottle age to show their true beauty. The Cte de Py is an area within Morgon made of black volcanic soil that imparts an austere mineral-like quality to the wines. Avirons, while displaying this lovely deep minerality, has a beguiling and unexpected suaveness that makes it a delight to drink now. You can safely buy this one by the case, because judging from past vintages of his Morgon Cte de Py, it will develop beautifully with bottle age.
