Julienas 2019

Stéphane Aviron

Terroir: Stéphane Aviron sources his Juliénas from the areas of “Vayolette” and “La Prat” from two well-established growers in the appellation. The soils in these parcels are granite with clay and limestone with old vines ranging in age from 45 to 55 years old.

Vinification: Traditional Beaujolais winemaking is used. Grapes are vinified separately until time for the final blending and bottling. Whole bunches are fermented and then macerated in temperature controlled stainless steel vats for eight to nine days. The wine is aged for 12 months in large, neutral oak barrels, foudres of 50 hectoliters, to retain the purity of the fruit.

Additional Information

About the Vintage: 2018 was one of the best vintages Stéphane Aviron has made in the past twenty years and by some considerations a perfect vintage for Beaujolais!
Winter was cold and rainy which provided the vines with a water reserve to last into the growing season. Spring was warm. Summer was dry and warm with no disease present in the vineyards.
Harvest started at the end of August and continued until the beginning to September for some of the later-ripening vineyards.
The wines are high alcohol, but still very good balance between acidity and alcohol, creating harmonious wines. All the conditions for a great wine were met, resulting in a legendary vintage for Beaujolais.

This wine has complex herbal, red cherry and wild strawberry aromas. The flavors are ripe and concentrated with structure. The wine has a packed character that speaks of firm but still soft tannins that will help the wine age for years. Aging for at least two years is recommended for the best drinkability.
