Stéphane Aviron - Julienas 2016

Overview

Terroir: Once again, Stephan Aviron is sourcing his Julienas from two well established growers in the appellation of Julienas. In both plots vines average over 50 years. Soils are also consistent and are made up primarily of granite stones, sand and chalk.

Vinification: Grapes are vinified separately until time for the final blending and bottling. The must is macerated in temperature controlled stainless steel vats for 12-15 days and then aged for 12-14 months in a combination of new and used oak casks.

This wine has complex herbal, red cherry and wild strawberry aromas. The flavors are ripe but firm, the wine has a packed character that speaks of firm but soft tannins that will help the wine age well.

While not as ripe and fleshy as the 2015 wines from Beaujolais, the 2016s are racier while maintaining charm for which the region is known. Avirons Julinas borrows a bit of the density of his Chnas and combines it with an alluring spice. Suave mild tannins and bright acidity make it ideal for current consumption.
