Stéphane Aviron - Fleurie Domaine de la Madrière 2019
Overview
Terroir: Fleurie is one of the top crus in Beaujolais producing wines of deep fruit and great structure. Stéphane Aviron’s Fleurie is sourced from a family owned hillside vineyard on the western side of the appellation, “La Mandone.” This famed vineyard features very steep slopes with granite soils that requires all work and harvesting to be done by hand. The vines here are very old, between 55 and 90 years in age.
Vinification: Grapes are handpicked and sorted upon arrival at the winery. Whole bunches are fermented and then macerated in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats for seven days. For the élévage, the wine is aged in large, neutral oak barrels, also known as foudres, that are 50 hectoliters in size (over 1300 gallons) for 12 months.

About the Vintage: 2018 was one of the best vintages Stéphane Aviron has made in the past twenty years and by some considerations a perfect vintage for Beaujolais! Winter was cold and rainy which provided the vines with a water reserve to last into the growing season. Spring was warm. Summer was dry and warm with no disease present in the vineyards. Harvest started at the end of August and continued until the beginning to September for some of the later-ripening vineyards. The wines are high alcohol, but still very good balance between acidity and alcohol, creating harmonious wines. All the conditions for a great wine were met, resulting in a legendary vintage for Beaujolais. A true Burgundy in many ways. This Fleurie shows very similar characteristics to a fine Moulin à Vent with abudant ripe almost macerated fruit and rich, structured tannins. This is a truly age-worthy Beaujolais.
