Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG “Proemio” 2006

Santi

Proemio is Santi’s top selection routinely praised in the world wine press.

Terroir: The Santi Amarone Proemio is sourced from several of the estates top vineyards. Vines average 40+ years old and are planted in ideal hillside locations with sunny south/ southeast exposures.

Vinification: Proemio is a blend of Corvina, Corvinone and a small amount of Rondinella. Harvest begins by hand in late September, as the team meticulously harvests only the best of the vineyards fruit typically amounting to only 10% of the vineyard yield. The grapes are placed in wooden boxes, and left to dry in controlled humidity until February of the following year. After pressing, the traditional maceration takes place over a period of more than three weeks, which is followed by up to 3 years aging in the cellars.

Glorious nose of decadent dark fruit that doesnt make it through to the palate. Or not yet, at least. A cool vintage has delivered a highly structured wine thats unresolved at the moment but will be brilliant in 10 years.

"Holds its power close to the chest so that you need to "chew" on it a bit to get it to show; intriguing because of that, with a personality."
Grade: "Italy's Amarone della Valpolicella begins and ends with a bang."

"A funky, old-fashioned Amarone with dried fruit flavors of figs and prunes, this is unbashedly volatile and more complex for it. Serve it in lieu of dessert, with a cheese plate."

“The style of the Valpolicella reds highlights generous aromas and taut palates rather than power, often with excellent results. The ’06 Amarone Proemio is penalized by a too-early release but shows considerable potential and simply requires further time in bottle.”

"Amarone Proemio shows mature fruit aromas of black cherry and blackberry jam backed by elegant tones of clove, pepper, cola and cedar wood. The wine represents a smooth, clean and traditional style that would pair with grilled steak or roast pork"
