Terroir: Re Manfredi’s Vineyard of the Serpents is a 15-acre hillside vineyard sitting at 1600 feet in elevation. Soils are made up entirely of well-drained volcanic matter. The vineyard is made up of two separate parcels; one containing 40-year old vines densely planted and pruned using the Guyot method. The second seven-acre parcel was planted in 2001 and contains extremely dense plantings of 5,000 vines per hectare.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, sorted and macerated on the skins for 15-20 days followed by fermentation in French Allier oak casks. The wine is aged for 12 months in 50% new and 50% 2nd-use oak and bottled without filtration. With excellent tobacco flavors and deep, dark fruit, this is a wine that will change and improve for another decade and easily run for another decade beyond that. 10,000 bottles produced.
Re Manfredi “Serpara” Aglianico del Vulture has been awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso for vintages 2003, 2010.
The wine has full, complex aromas with distinctive sour cherry notes, as well as vanilla and thyme. On the palate, the wine is full and powerful, with an elegant and warm spicy bottom note, and a very persistent aftertaste.
