Re Manfredi - Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2013

Terroir: The Re Manfredi Aglianico del Vulture is sourced from 128 acres of estate vineyards located on the lower elevations (1200ft) of an extinct volcano. Vines average 30 years and are planted at a dense ration of 3000 vines per acre, and are raised using the guyot and cordon pruning methods.

Vinification: Grapes are manually harvested upon full ripeness beginning in mid-October. Fermentation takes place in neutral vats over a period of 15-20 days with daily pumping over of the must. Upon completion the young wines are racked and aged for 20-24 months in a combination of used French oak barriques and big oak casks. Barrels range from 1-5 years old. 40,000 bottles produced.

Re Manfredi Aglianico del Vulture has been awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso for vintages 1999, 2005, 2010, 2011.

Additional Details edit

This Aglianico is surprisingly approachable in its youth. A pretty, fruit driven nose is followed by a full bodied palate of dark berry fruit and minty herb leading up to a firm, tannic filled finish.

"Rich aromas of truffle, violet, plum and cherry are dense on the nose of this red that spent 12 months in half new and half used oak. There's immense polish and verve to the palate, with silken, seductive tannins wrapping around all the luscious berry fruit. Yet with all that, there's still ample lift from fresh acidity, making this a well-balanced, plush red."

"A full-bodied, creamy red, layering dense tannins with a streak of tarry mineral and flavors of baked black currant, eucalyptus, savory tobacco and woodsy spice. Best after 2021. 3,300 cases made."

Over the years, Re Manfredi has developed a precise and somewhat conservative approach to its high end red wines. The 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Taglio del Tralcio is indeed a classic interpretation of the appellation that stays neatly within its flavor boundaries. It offers high intensity, as expected, with a forthcoming array of dark fruit, spice and volcanic-ashy background notes. The wine achieves impressive harmony and balance. Great care has been taken to soften the mouthfeel and to manage the unruly tannins that Aglianico is known for.
