Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2012

Re Manfredi

Terroir: The Re Manfredi Aglianico del Vulture is sourced from 128 acres of estate vineyards located on the lower elevations (1200ft) of an extinct volcano. Vines average 30 years and are planted at a dense ration of 3000 vines per acre, and are raised using the guyot and cordon pruning methods.

Vinification: Grapes are manually harvested upon full ripeness beginning in mid-October. Fermentation takes place in neutral vats over a period of 15-20 days with daily pumping over of the must. Upon completion the young wines are racked and aged for 20-24 months in a combination of used French oak barriques and big oak casks. Barrels range from 1-5 years old. 40,000 bottles produced.

Re Manfredi Aglianico del Vulture has been awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso for vintages 1999, 2005, 2010, 2011.

Additional Information

This Aglianico is surprisingly approachable in its youth. A pretty, fruit driven nose is followed by a full bodied palate of dark berry fruit and minty herb leading up to a firm, tannic filled finish.

Smoke, dark plum, chopped herb, baking spice and pressed violet aromas escape the glass. The full-bodied rounded palate offers dried black cherry, blackberry extract, licorice and dried herb framed in fine-grained tannins.

Deep ruby-red. Aromas of black cherry and flowers are strongly marked by camphor and coffee. Thick, dense and youthfully chewy, offering fresh plum, chlorophyll and violet flavors on the long, tactile finish. Aged in French oak barriques, this is made with grapes grown in a vineyard of 52 hectares (32 hectares of 20-year-old vines and 20 hectares of roughly 10-year-old vines), planted at roughly 400 meters above sea level in the area of Venosa.

An established producer, making wines of excellent structure. This is a meaty, earthy style of Agliancico with notes of charred meat. Good balance of acidity, though it's a touch astringent at present.

Savory herb and olive notes lead the way in this smoky red, leading to a rich mix of dried strawberry, cured tobacco, violet and mandarin orange peel accents. Drink now through 2025

Grilled herb and balsam intensity appear at the front of the 2012 Aglianico del Vulture. Those are only preliminary aromas that soon lift to reveal more substantial tones of black fruit, dried cherry, tar, asphalt and crushed mineral. The bouquet is generous and rich but the mouthfeel is short on the mid palate. This makes for a less formal and approachable interpretation of the mighty Aglianico grape.
