Olivier Leflaive - Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles 2016

Overview

Terroir: As the name implies, the 1er Cru Clos de Angles is situated in the angle between Volnay Fremiets and Volnay Clos de la Barre mid-level on the slope below the village and just south of the border with Pommard. Leflaive sources from a 9 acre parcel. Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested prior to fermentation and aging in a combination of new and used oak barrels and stainless steel.

"The 2016 Volnay Clos des Angles 1er Cru has a lot of conspicuous new oak on the nose. I find it simpatico with the fruit underneath, it simply needs time. What I appreciate is that Volnay typicité still shines through. The palate is medium-bodied. There is certainly a lot of new wood tannins that unfortunately occlude the appellation character and render the wine a little soulless. Just pushed too much. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy."
