Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos D’âne (Monopole) 2017

Olivier Leflaive

Terroir: Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d’Âne is located next to Meursault Perrières Dessus, on the territory of Blagny. The sloping terroir is on a fat, marly and stony soil, which gives the flint mineral flavor to the wine. The vine happens to suffer from dryness in summer. It is a former Domaine Leflaive property.

Vinification The parcels are hand harvested and undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel. The Maison restricts the use of new oak to just 25% to retain vineyard character. The wines see on average 12 months in barrel before a gentle fining, blending and finally bottling. The wine will rest in bottle for 15-18 months prior to release.

Additional Information

Pretty green-gold in color. The nose is fragrant with honey and spices. The mouth is sumptuous and rich, with elegant mid-palate flavors and lovely texture, bounce, finesse and silkiness.

"Plush and expressive, this white exudes butterscotch, vanilla, peach and lemon aromas and flavors. Turns lean and focused on the precise, stony finish. Best from 2021 through 2028. 20 cases imported."

"The 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Âne (Récolte du Domaine) is showing very well, opening in the glass with a youthful bouquet of green pear, fresh peach, nutmeg, pastry cream and crushed chalk, followed by a medium to full-bodied, racy and incisive palate, with a pretty core of fruit, a bright spine of acidity and a long, precise finish. One of the finest renditions of this bottling that I've tasted, it's a tightly wound Meursault that will reward some bottle age. As is the case across the board, the closure is Diam 10."

"2017 White. A deft application of wood sets off notes of hazelnut, citrus peel and acacia blossom. The sleek and precise yet nicely rich medium-bodied flavors aren’t quite as powerful but the finish is even more complex and somewhat unusually, even more persistent."

"Rich and almost heavy. Maybe almost too concentrated (!) but well-done expression."
