Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2015

Corton Charlemagne is the only white Grand Cru located north of Beaune, and is larger in size to the remaining five vineyards combined. The terroir of Corton is quite different than the Grand Crus to the south often offering wines of equal power, but driven by higher acidity and minerality.
Terroir: The hill of Corton offers an array of varying terroirs spread across the villages of Aloxe Corton, Pernand Vergelesses and Ladoix. Olivier Leflaive sources their fruit across each of these terroirs. The hillside is steep, well drained and very densly planted. Yields are very low.
Vinification: Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place entirely in oak, 30% of which is new. The wine is rested on its lees for a minimum of 15 months in the Leflaive cellars followed by a light fining and bottling. The Corton Charlemagne is aged in bottle for 18 months prior to release. Quantities of this rare wine are minimal.

Reductive aromas, with an abundant amount of lime and mineral notes with aromatic florals, impressive concentration and length on the palate with a long intense finish.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with a textural attack that gives way to a rather diffuse mid-palate and somewhat rustic finish that seems to be marked both by oak tannin and the warmth of the vintage. This isn't one of the highlights of the Olivier Leflaive portfolio this year." -

Date: Monday, April 23, 2018This wine combines power and richness with fruity crispness. The balance is just right, poised between lemon flavors and riper apricot. Even in this warm vintage, the minerality and acidity are intense and will allow the wine to age. Drink this wine from 2023. -

Date: Friday, June 30, 2017(from all 3 communes, with the majority of the blend coming from Aloxe). Once again firm reduction and sulfur obliterate the fruit. Neither though is present on the powerful and almost painfully intense flavors that ooze dry extract that cushions the quite firm acid spine shaping the driving, youthfully austere and explosively long finish where ample minerality surfaces. This is really quite serious and while its not elegant, its impressive.Grade: 92-94 Points
