Odfjell - Aliara Red 2014

Overview

Summary: Aliara is the Spanish name for the small tin cup used to dole out alcohol rations on sailing ships in times gone by. This blend is crafted from small batches of exceptional wines vinified with innovative winemaking techniques.

An artistic creation in which the winemaker sets no limits in combining New and Old World. Three or more varieties from three different valleys are harmoniously merged together to create this superior blend that reflects the best expression of each of Odfjell’s vineyards. It is crafted with a selection of the year’s best lots and barrels. A high-end wine that ages to a perfect assemblage in the bottle. A classic.

Grapes are sourced from Cauquenes-Maule Valley, Lontué Valley and Maipo Valley. Vines are 20-80 years old.

Vinification: The grapes were handpicked using 15-kg trays and 400-kg bins. Upon reception at the winery, the bunches were destemmed but not crushed. The whole berries underwent a six-day cold maceration at 14ºC prior to fermentation using native and selected yeasts in small tanks ranging from 1,000 L (T bins) to 10,000 L, followed by a 15-day post-fermentation maceration at 25ºC. Malolactic fermentation took place spontaneously in barrels.

"This brambly red blend has blackberries and dark plums, in essence-like, concentrated style and is super fresh for the age. The palate delivers some serious, firmish tannin with a bold, red-plum and herb-infused finish. A blend of 49% carignan, 22% malbec, 15% cabernet sauvignon and 14% syrah. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

"A blend of Carignan, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from Maipo, this wine is deep ruby-red in the glass. Cherry and plum jam aromas mix with cedar, sprigs of mint and sweet spices from the barrel. Polished tannins and a juicy freshness dominate the mouth, while oak takes over at the end. Cleansing and flavorsome. A serious wine."
