Le Chiuse - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2006

Terroir: On this 6ha vineyard, 15 year-old, cordon spur-trained Sangiovese Grosso vines are planted at a density of 4,500 plants/ha. Here, Sangiovese Grosso fruit is harvested by hand. Often no more than 10% of the Brunello fruit is selected for the Riserva bottling at the sorting table and is vinified separately.

Vinification: Grapes are crushed and transferred to tank by gravity followed by a 15-day maceration period at 29’c with frequent punch down of to cap during the first week to promote extraction. The wine is aged for three years in a combination of Allier and Slavonian casks followed by two additional years in bottle.

Riserva is only made in the top vintages

"Gripping in its tannic structure, this red is nonetheless centered on a core of sweet cherry, floral, mint and tobacco flavors. Shows a grace and fluidity, coursing through the finish with finesse and harmony. Ends with a fine mineral aftertaste. A picture of refinement and purity."

"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes across as a bit brawny in this vintage. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and licorice meld together in this somewhat chunky wine. This may merit a higher score down the road, but today the tannins lack a measure of polish."

"This beautiful Brunello opens with lavish tones of dark fruit, exotic spice, espresso bean and crushed black pepper. The mouthfeel is interesting because it starts off bold and rich, but ends with the focused or chiseled sharpness that is typical of Sangiovese Grosso."
