Kolbenhofer Schiava Alto Adige DOC 2018

This is a single vineyard wine sourced from Hofstatter’s Barthenau estate. Hofstatter was the first producer in the Alto-Adige to produce single vineyard wines at the equivalent of the grand cru level.

Terroir: The Jesuit monks of Innsbruck recognized the virtues of this vineyard and produced wine from it in the 18th century. This site drops into the deep Höllental gorge and has a very unique microclimate. Grapes ripen quite slowly in the persistent coolness and are handpicked in November. Massive prehistoric glaciers dug a broad gorge in the porphyry massif between the Ortler Alps and the Dolomites and created the Adige River and Lake Caldaro, which is fed by groundwater. Soils are made up of a mixture of clay, limestone and gravel. Vines average 35+ years old.

Vinification: The grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and the must is fermented with the skins using temperature control. The skins which are forced to the top of the tank during fermentation are pushed back down into the must in order to extract as much color, tannins and fruit as possible. Following malolactic fermentation the young wine is aged for 9 months on its lees in neutral concrete tank.

Additional Information

It is full ruby in color with violet reflexes, fresh and intensely fruity on the nose, fragrant with a flavour of woodland berry fruits on the palate and a lightly almondy finish. The wine’s succulent, gentle fruity character , soft, unobtrusive tannins and mild supple acidity make it a favourite for social drinking.

"The 2018 Schiava Kolbenhofer from J. Hofstatter is a spicy and jovial wine, displaying exotic sweet spice, crushed raspberry and hints of floral undergrowth. It’s juicy and pliant, blending tart wild berry fruit with saline-minerals, all brought to life by brisk acidity. A hint of tannin completes the finish."
