H&B Provence - Cotes de Provence Rosé 2017

Overview

H&B Provence rosé in the basket of a picnic among lavender fields and olive trees or just before a gentle nap in the shadow of a hundred years old plane tree while lulled by the song of the cicadas... H&B Provence rosé along for a play of pétanque on a nice little square of a Provence village... H&B Provence rosé in the heat of the long summer evenings when chatting and having fun with friends near the pool.

Vinification: We focused our selections on the cooler parts of the upper Provence vineyards where the oak and olive tree forests protect the vines planted in the clay-limestone soils and, in some ways, seem to nourish them. The higher altitudes also allow a full maturity without excessive sugars (and therefore alcoholic degree in the finished wines). Blend is completed with grapes from the limestone foothills of Montagne Sainte Victoire, whose wines are almost marked by a vivacious and persistent minerality. Very fresh Cinsault planted a few meters from the Mediterranean Sea in La Londe des Maures are introduced to bring a subtle salty and anise expression.

Vines are harvested at night between 3.00am and 9.00am in order to avoid oxidation and to preserve all of the fresh characteristics of the terroir and varietal. Grenache and Syrah are macerated together so that their personalities and qualities intermingle and we find that the reductive character of Syrah balances beautifully with the oxidative natural character of Grenache.

"Limpid orange. Pungent red berry and orange zest scents show good clarity and spicy lift. Fleshy and dry on the palate, offering ripe strawberry and tangerine flavors that tighten up on the back half. Finishes chewy and taut, displaying a sneaky floral quality and good persistence."

A friendly style, with a mix of peach, white raspberry and blood orange notes streaming throughout. A light chalky hint gives this spine through the finish. Grenache, Cinsault and Vermentino. Drink now.

To the firm's credit, Hecht & Bannier does a nice job distinguishing the styles of their three roses. The 2017 CdP Rose is a plump, medium-bodied effort, marked by crisp, citrusy fruit. Passion fruit and grapefruit nuances give it a zippy, refreshing finish.
