The Glazebrook family were founding partners of Ngatarawa with Alwyn Corban in 1981. Today Alwyn Corban and Brian Corban continue their 400 year family winemaking heritage as sole proprietors of Ngatarawa Wines in Hawkes Bay. Fine wine has a sense of place and the map coordinates on the label reinforce the origin of the wines.
Terroir: On the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay enjoys a temperate climate ideally suited to producing full-flavored wines showing strong varietal intensity. In Hawke’s Bay premium Merlot is mostly grown on deep gravels in warmest vineyard sites. The vines are hedged, leaf plucked and the crop thinned. Plum is a typical flavor of Merlot from these vineyards.
Vinification: Grapes were machine harvested at sugar levels between 23 and 24 Brix, crushed and destemmed for this wine. Each batch was inoculated with selected yeast to ensure a hot fermentation peaking at 30C. They were macerated on skins post ferment for up to 14 days before pressing and malo-lactic fermentation. The final blend includes 10% Malbec which gives added structure and complexity to the wine.
The 2015 vintage continues a trio of excellent vintages, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Early spring was cool which resulted in variable flowering and lower yields on most varieties. Summer was hot and dry which ensured optimal ripeness at harvest. The lighter crops gave great concentration to the wines.
Dark plum and cherry flavours with a cassis edge. Round and textured palate with fine grained tannins. Hints of spice and cedar add interest. May be enjoyed with all red meat dishes and strongly flavoured cheeses.
