Vigna del Fiore Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016

Fattoria dei Barbi

Fattoria dei Barbi’s single-vineyard Brunello bottling, Vigna del Fiore, was first produced in 1981 for the celebration of the 50th birthday of Francesca Cinelli Colombini, a pioneer and innovator of the family business.

Terroir: This 14-acre (5.7-hectare) vineyard has been cultivated since the 16th Century. It is one of the most Eastern and oldest vineyard sites in the Brunello zone (planted in 1939). The particular exposition and composition of the soil results in a Brunello with a very elegant bouquet, balance, and added complexity.

Vinification: Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration (“cold-soak”), which consists of cooling the grapes at a temperature of 3°-5°C (37 – 41°F) in an anaerobic environment (under a CO2 blanket) to protect the fruit from oxidation. This non-alcoholic, aqueous extraction results in an increased color intensity and stability, softer astringency and tannins and more body and aromatics. After 48 hours, the temperature is raised and alcoholic fermentation begins, lasting 16 -17 days and temperatures reach 29°- 30°C (81 – 86°F). After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in small-medium size oak barrels (500L – 20HL) for the first months, followed by two years in 30HL Slavonian oak casks. The wine rests in bottle for four months before release.

Additional Information

Deep ruby red color with garnet notes on the rim. Complex aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, almond and vanilla with hints of balsamic. The aromas repeat on the palate which is smooth and balanced with added spice and a long, persistent finish. This wine is generally ready to drink soon after release and has an excellent capacity to age.

"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore is a tightly constructed wine, with balanced aromas and good integration in terms of both the acidity and the tannins. These results have been smoothed over and finely polished by barrel and bottle aging over these past five years since the harvest. In fact, it's nothing but smooth sailing over the senses from start to long finish. Nothing is out of place, and I expect the tannins to further soften before this production of 4,000 bottles is released in March of 2021. There is a little something special that pulls at my heartstrings each year when I taste the wines of Fattoria dei Barbi. It's connected to the realization that I am tasting a creation made by one of the region's oldest estates and the respect I feel for the family that has carried forth this proud agricultural tradition with such care. This estate is located at the heart of the appellation on the "collina" (or hill) where Brunello was born."
