Fattoria dei Barbi - Vigna del Fiore Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Overview

Fattoria dei Barbi’s single-vineyard Brunello bottling, Vigna del Fiore, was first produced in 1981 for the celebration of the 50th birthday of Francesca Cinelli Colombini, a pioneer and innovator of the family business.

Terroir: This 14-acre (5.7-hectare) vineyard has been cultivated since the 16th Century. It is one of the most Eastern and oldest vineyard sites in the Brunello zone (planted in 1939). The particular exposition and composition of the soil results in a Brunello with a very elegant bouquet, balance, and added complexity.

Vinification: Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration (“cold-soak”), which consists of cooling the grapes at a temperature of 3°-5°C (37 – 41°F) in an anaerobic environment (under a CO2 blanket) to protect the fruit from oxidation. This non-alcoholic, aqueous extraction results in an increased color intensity and stability, softer astringency and tannins and more body and aromatics. After 48 hours, the temperature is raised and alcoholic fermentation begins, lasting 16 -17 days and temperatures reach 29°- 30°C (81 – 86°F). After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in small-medium size oak barrels (500L – 20HL) for the first months, followed by two years in 30HL Slavonian oak casks. The wine rests in bottle for four months before release.

Additional Details edit

Deep ruby red color with garnet notes on the rim. Complex aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, almond and vanilla with hints of balsamic. The aromas repeat on the palate which is smooth and balanced with added spice and a long, persistent finish. This wine is generally ready to drink soon after release and has an excellent capacity to age.

"A bright, fresh version, delivering cherry, plum, iron and tar flavors. Features ample tannins underneath, with good acidity, and displays the balance and length to develop over the next two decades. Best from 2023 through 2040. 333 cases made, 200 cases imported."

"Good medium red-ruby. Deep aromas of blackberry, raspberry and tea leaf. Juicy and intense, but extremely tight; quite closed currently, with aeration bringing up only very faint red and dark berry and flinty herb flavors that remain completely compressed by the strong tannic cloak. Finishes with mouthcoating astringency that had me scrambling for bread. Completely charmless right now, this very young, taut wine needs many years of patience; my hope is the tannins resolve before the fruit disappears."

"Camphor, rose and new leather shape the nose along with whiffs of woodland berry and underbrush. It's full bodied and loaded with elegance, delivering mature Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and tobacco set against firm fine-grained tannins. Drink 2023–2030."

"The Fattoria dei Barbi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore unfolds slowly to reveal a tight core of wild berry aromas, balsam herb and light touches of smoke and spice. This is a medium-weight expression that offers the carefully measured acidity and structure to ensure a healthy aging future ahead. Speaking of aging, Brunello is released five years after the harvest, and tertiary notes defined by cellar age are always an important characteristic of the wine. I notice that this Brunello has embraced its age with particular grace and elegance. You could wait to age it longer, or you could also enjoy this bottle in the near and medium term. Some 6,600 bottles were released in January 2020."

"This is a very transparent and beautiful Brunello with black cherries and dark mushrooms on the nose and palate. Full body, round and juicy tannins that turn firm and lightly chewy at the end of the palate. Tight still. Give this two or three years to come together. Better after 2021."
