Vigna del Fiore Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

Fattoria dei Barbi

Fattoria dei Barbi’s single-vineyard Brunello bottling, Vigna del Fiore, was first produced in 1981 for the celebration of the 50th birthday of Francesca Cinelli Colombini, a pioneer and innovator of the family business.

Terroir: This 14-acre (5.7-hectare) vineyard has been cultivated since the 16th Century. It is one of the most Eastern and oldest vineyard sites in the Brunello zone (planted in 1939). The particular exposition and composition of the soil results in a Brunello with a very elegant bouquet, balance, and added complexity.

Vinification: Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration (“cold-soak”), which consists of cooling the grapes at a temperature of 3°-5°C (37 – 41°F) in an anaerobic environment (under a CO2 blanket) to protect the fruit from oxidation. This non-alcoholic, aqueous extraction results in an increased color intensity and stability, softer astringency and tannins and more body and aromatics. After 48 hours, the temperature is raised and alcoholic fermentation begins, lasting 16 -17 days and temperatures reach 29°- 30°C (81 – 86°F). After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in small-medium size oak barrels (500L – 20HL) for the first months, followed by two years in 30HL Slavonian oak casks. The wine rests in bottle for four months before release.

Additional Information

Deep ruby red color with garnet notes on the rim. Complex aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, almond and vanilla with hints of balsamic. The aromas repeat on the palate which is smooth and balanced with added spice and a long, persistent finish. This wine is generally ready to drink soon after release and has an excellent capacity to age.

Rich, bursting with cherry, plum, spice and chocolate flavors. Accents of tobacco and leather seep in at the edges as this winds down on the long finish. Dense and powerful. Best from 2022 through 2036.

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore is a superb wine from an estate that boasts some of the most prized pedigree in Montalcino. This wine made me so happy to taste. Its various elements of spice, dark fruit and textural fortitude come together with seamless precision. Of course, you get that bright acidity on the close that keeps the palate ready for the next sip. These characteristics bode well for its future cellar longevity. The winemaking style is classic and contemporary at once. Only 4,000 bottles were produced.

Bright, red. Expressive aromas of red currant, licorice, flowers and tar. Floral, bright and subtle, with blood orange and red fruit flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes suave, dry, and long. Lovely, elegant, old-style Brunello that will prove very food-flexible.

Medium red with a hint of amber at the rim. Deep, perfumed nose of red cherry, cedar and violet. Enters juice and round, displaying outstanding sweetness to the red fruit flavors, then more austere, with a noteworthy tannic spine providing backbone but also suppressing the fruit somewhat on the long, clean, flinty back end. This will really benefit from a good five or six years of cellaring - at least.

A superb wine for the mellow and complex, concentrated palate, this has a very impressive dark-cherry and earthy core. Spiced leather and sweet and rich red- and dark-cherry fruits roll into the finish. Great wine. Try from 2022.

Aromas of wild berry, leather, rose and tobacco leaf come together in the glass. The polished full-bodied palate doles out crushed raspberry, Morello cherry and star anise set against taut fine-grained tannins. Give this time to fully develop. Drink 20232033.
