Riesling Jubilee 2009

Famille Hugel

Hugel’s ‘Jubilee’ are sourced exclusively from family owned Grand Cru vineyards in the top terroirs in Alsace.

Terroir: Riesling Jubilee is sourced from the family owned vines on the steep slopes of the Schoenenbourg vineyard high above the village of Riquewihr. The vineyard is extremely steeply pitched and has an ideal south/ southeast exposure.

Vinification: The grapes are harvested by hand and brought to the winery in Riquewihr for additional sorting prior to vinification. After a strict sorting the grapes are pressed and fermented at cool temperatures in either stainless steel or large neutral oak casks. The young wines are then fed by gravity to the cellars for aging. Following aging the wines are lightly filtered, bottled and then stored until release to the market.

Part of the impressive series of Jubile wines that are aged before release, this Hugel Riesling is just getting to maturity with its soft aromatic character, touch of toastiness, and refreshing herbal flavors. It's now ready to drink, although it will be even better from 2016.

Jubilee Hugel is the family's proprietary designation for a dry Grand Cru bottling. The 2009 Riesling was absolutely majestic, with a floral nose and mineral elegance that conveys its Schoenenbourg Grand Cru status loud and clear. Deep, expressive, balanced, and ripe, the wine finishes at a languorous pace, allowing extra time to savor it... with everything.

"Clear, fully ripe, bright fruit aromas along with some minty/herbal and mineral/earthy flavors on the nose open the intensely and deeply straw-yellow colored 2009 Riesling Hugel Jubilee. Ripe but very mineral on the palate, with a lower acidity than 2010 yet still vital and elegant, this generously full-bodied, well structured and balanced undercover Schoenenbourg, with its long and aromatic finish, is already lovely to drink but should hold its form over the next decade."

"Medium pale yellow. Pineapple, flowers, ginger and aromatic herbs on the nose; smells creamy! Then very ripe and rich but extremely young, with nicely integrated acidity and a serious, palate-clutching texture to its pineapple and mace flavors. Offers considerable early appeal, but the long, tactile finish suggests this will reward several years of aging. Hugel told me he normally likes his Jubilee rieslings best at four or five years of age "after they go through the Schoenenbourg sickness." This nicely transcends the warm vintage."

"A dense and soft riesling with sliced lemon, pear and spice character. Full and intense with wonderful lime, mineral and flint. Rich and flavorful. Open and delicious now. Drink now."
