Hugel’s ‘Jubilee’ are sourced exclusively from family owned Grand Cru vineyards in the top terroirs in Alsace.
Terroir: Riesling Jubilee is sourced from the family owned vines on the steep slopes of the Schoenenbourg vineyard high above the village of Riquewihr. The vineyard is extremely steeply pitched and has an ideal south/ southeast exposure.
Vinification: The grapes are harvested by hand and brought to the winery in Riquewihr for additional sorting prior to vinification. After a strict sorting the grapes are pressed and fermented at cool temperatures in either stainless steel or large neutral oak casks. The young wines are then fed by gravity to the cellars for aging. Following aging the wines are lightly filtered, bottled and then stored until release to the market.

Exhibiting lovely balance in the mouth, this seems light and bright on entry before the richness of fruit makes itself known on the mid-palate. Lovely depth of flavor with a hint of coconut milk accents the under-ripe apricot fruit of the mid-palate. More spicy flavors return on the moderately long finish. There’s a nice edge of sweetness here though this is quite dry." -

I enjoyed tasting it so much because it explains everything about the variety: the esoteric complexity, vanishing-point length and masterful balance which underpin greatness in any wine, plus tremendous value for money. Luscious honeydew melon fruit enlivened by juicy, invigorating citrus and tinged with lemon zest, ginger, and chalky mineral traces informs a silken-textured palate, leading to a strikingly honeyed and bright, bitterly zesty and overtly stony finish. This is an excellent candidate for at least 9-12 further years of aging. (The 2001 Jubilee, incidentally, is no finer in overall quality, and now overtly fusil, chalky, peachy, and truffle-scented, with an oily-rich palate and full-throttle finish.)"
