Famille Hugel - Riesling Classic 2016
Terroir: The grapes used to produce Hugels "Classic" wines come exclusively from estate owned vineyards or from growers under long term contract surrounding the village of Riquewihr.
Vinification: Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled vats followed by natural clarification in nuetral vessels over the winter. The wine is lightly fined and gently filtered prior to bottling in the spring.
From The Wine Advocate "New is the Classic (former Hugel) range that represents "the essence of the pure, dry Famille Hugel style" and now includes Muscat and Pinot Gris, along with all the other noble grapes. The grapes of the Classic range are predominantly purchased but obligatory hand-picked from vineyards with clay-limestone soils in Riquewihr and neighbouring villages, and give classic gastronomic wines with a dry expression."

"Glints of very ripe, juicy pear and clementine on the nose turn into aromatic mandarin on the lively, open and absolutely fruit-laden palate that has both the juiciness and tartness of ripe citrus. Despite the light body the fruit fills mouth and mind. The finish is dry, clean, fresh and has a tropical echo."

"An extremely attractive young dry riesling brimming with lemon, pear and vanilla-bean aromas. Quite a sleek profile with crisp acidity, but it also has a lot of charm and some positive tannins that adds interest at the finish. Drink now or in 2019 and 2020. 50% from estate fruit and 50% bought-in grapes, where most of them are from limestone-marl soils, as well as some from granite."

"Straw-green. Lovely chamomile, mint, cardamom and green apple notes on the nose and in the mouth. Lovely juiciness and laser-like vivacity. The classically dry finish is long, bright and floral. Made with roughly 40-60% bought grapes, so there are 120,000 bottles per year of this classic, bright, fresh Alsace Riesling."
