Famille Hugel - Gewurztraminer Classic 2015
Overview
Terroir: The grapes used to produce Hugels "Classic" wines come exclusively from estate owned vineyards or from growers under long term contract surrounding the village of Riquewihr.
Vinification: Hugel Gewurztraminer is a flagship wine for the Hugel family. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled vats followed by natural clarification in nuetral vessels over the winter. The wine is lightly fined and gently filtered prior to bottling in the spring.
From The Wine Advocate "New is the Classic (former Hugel) range that represents "the essence of the pure, dry Famille Hugel style" and now includes Muscat and Pinot Gris, along with all the other noble grapes. The grapes of the Classic range are predominantly purchased but obligatory hand-picked from vineyards with clay-limestone soils in Riquewihr and neighbouring villages, and give classic gastronomic wines with a dry expression."

Tender notes of jasmine and rose rise from the glass. The concentrated palate has both freshness and texture from citrus zestiness. Pear and peach notes are subtle but long on the dry, textured finish.

"Bright and supple at the same time. This gewurztraminer is light years removed from the sweet showgirl wines that dominate the market. The lychee and Turkish-delight character of the grape only shows at the finish. Drink now or in 2019 and 2020."

"Bright straw-gold. Delicate but enticing aromas of pineapple, marzipan, sweet spices and grapefruit nectar, plus a touch of smoky grilled nuts that complements rather than overwhelms the wine. Suave and complex, this showcases lovely balance and a captivating sweet-sour quality on the long, floral finish. Made with 50% bought grapes, this Gewürz offers an uncanny combination of richness and delicacy; the note of grilled nuts on the back end is typical of the warm year."

The 2015 Gewurztraminer Classic opens clear, fresh and spicy on the nose. The palate is pure and salty, pretty intense and provided with ripe pear aromas. The 2015 is stunningly clear, fresh and finessed for the vintage and finishes with good grip and tension.
