Domaine Labruyère - Le Clos du Moulin-à-Vent 2014

Overview

Terroir: Domaine Labruyère owns approximately 35 acres of prime vineyards in Moulin-à-Vent. Le Clos du Moulin-à-Vent is sourced exclusively from the Le Clos du Moulin vineyard where vines are very densely planted in soils of granite and quartz. Vines here average 50 years old.

Vinification: Grapes are hand picked parcel by parcel as they reach phenolic ripeness and transported to the winery in small 25kg crates to avoid damage. Upon arrival the grapes are sorted twice prior to de-stemming. Vinification begins with a 20-day maceration at cool temperatures in stainless steel and concrete vats prior to aging in the cellars in oak cask.

From a single-walled vineyard, this is a ripe, generous and still structured cru wine. It has layers of delicious black-plum fruits and a jammy ripe texture that cushions the tannins. The vineyard is wholly owned by Edouard Labruyre, making it a monopole. Drink from 2018.

A creamy, medium-bodied red, boasting layered flavors of black currant, blackberry coulis and espresso, with accents of Asian spice and aromatic herb. Moderate tannins and firm, integrated acidity structure the tangy finish. Drink now through 2020.

Le Clos is a 2.3-acre parcel of 70-year old vines, their fruit destemmed and fermented in a concrete vat. It created a powerful 2014, with major tannic presence, and fruit that stands as an equal to the tannins, youthful and invigorating, floral and ripe. There's a sense of fresh wild strawberries under all the impacted black-tea tannins, held firm and right. Suited to long aging.
