Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2013

Domaine Jacques Prieur

Terroir: Volnay 1er Cru Santenots sits on the southern boundary of the Volnay appellation. Domaine Jacques Prieur owns approximately 1.4 acres of Volnay portion of this vineyard. This is an extremely unique vineyard as producers are able to produce both white Meursault 1er Cru or red Volnay 1er Cru from the same parcel. The vines face almost due east and the soil is heavy in nature, primarily clay and silt.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 20 days prior to fermentation. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Additional Information

2013, The sky fell down on our heads!
What a little difference a year makes… After an arduous weather in 2012 we hoped for a serene 2013 vintage, but Nature decided otherwise!
Once again, vines, throughout the growing season and until the final maturity of the grapes, underwent all assaults of nature: long and grey winter, sullen and rainy spring, slow growth cycle, late flowering (second half of June) with coulure and millerandage and a month of July marked by violent hailstorms, especially the one on 23rd July in Côte de Beaune that has caused large crop losses (from 10% to 100 % depending on location). All these weather conditions gave way to a significant drop in production. Fortunately, warm, dry, sunny August and soft and slightly damp September allowed the small amount of grapes to mature by the beginning of October. Nevertheless, we had to remain vigilant and very flexible facing the botrytis development on Chardonnay. Picking began on 2nd October, confirming 2013 as a late harvest vintage.
The overall quality of the wines is not affected by these weather disturbances.

Intense ruby red. Berries with grains featuring flint notes. The palate is filled with spicy and fruity flavors with dense tannins.

"This is more obviously reduced though the funk does not extend to the strikingly refined and pure medium-bodied flavors that display even more minerality on the cool, restrained and extract-rich finish. The supporting tannins are firm but fine and this should amply reward at least a decade of cellaring and more would not surprise me."

"(these vines were harvested on October 8): Bright, deep red with darker highlights. Sexy aromas of red and darker fruits lifted by a floral element. Suave, supple and vinous, offering an agreeable early balance to the berry and floral flavors. Finishes with nicely buffered tannins and sneaky persistence. Lovely fruit here."
