Terroir: Domaine Jacques Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Santenots is a 3 acre walled parcel of the greater Santenots vineyard well situated on the center slope with a due eastern exposure on the southern boundary of the Volnay appellation. This is a monopole vineyard, exclusive to Domaine Jacques Prieur. Soils are very well drained and comprised primarily of magnesium and limestone.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 20 days prior to fermentation. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.
2016, 26th-28th April: Devastating frost episode!
After a very mild winter and a warm spring weather in the second half of April, the bud break was advanced but the frost with high level or humidity at the end of the month destroyed the parcels with the best exposition. After the frost the vine was developing slowly. Acceleration in growth and the maturity of grapes were possible thanks to very warm and dry summer, with ripening that started quickly by mid-August. The harvest started on 20th September and the sanitary condition of the vineyard was perfect.
The overall quality of the wines is not affected by these weather disturbances.
Intense dark ruby red. Very tempting, precise, fresh red berries (cherry, cherry-stone), evolving into slightly toasted notes on the nose. The palate is tender, flavorful, fruity and fleshy (fresh cherry). Fine and digestible tannins on the finish.
