(from a mix of older vines up to 80 years of age; 100% whole clusters). Subtle but not invisible oak easily allows the liqueur-like black cherry, spice, lavender and a whisper of dried mandarin orange peel to be appreciated. There is excellent density to the sleekly muscular and mineral-driven flavors that possess an even finer mouth feel while delivering notably better depth and length on the powerful and built-to-age finale. This is absolutely going to require extended patience but it should very much be worth the wait.

Dark, bright red. Much more floral on the nose than the young-vines Santenots, offering scents and flavors of red cherry, violet and red licorice. Lovely palate-caressing thickness of texture combined with real lift and verve. This suave, bright, seamless wine is much deeper than the basic Santenots, with its tannins melting into the fruit.

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Santenots comes from the oldest vines in the parcel, more than 55 years old. It clearly has more precision and focus than the younger vines in the Santenots, with notes of blackcurrant, cassis and cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with well-integrated new oak (50%) with a smooth and quite seductive, blood orange-infused finish that has a pleasant edge. This is one of the best Clos des Santenots that I have tasted from Jacques Prieur.
