Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2014
Domaine Jacques Prieur
Terroir: 1er Cru Champans is one of the larger 1er Cru vineyards in the village of Volnay. The vineyard sits just west of the village on a rather steep portion of the hill and sees optimal exposure to the sun thoughout the growing season. Domaine Jacques Prieur owns a bit less than 1 acres on the upper slope of the vineyard.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 19 days prior to fermentation. The wine ages for a total of 17 months in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Under the influence of a soft and damp winter and hot and dry spring, the vine growth cycle began earlier than usual, by the end of March. Therefore, 2014 was immediately placed among the earliest vintages of the last two decades.
But this changed overnight. On Saturday, 28th June, a violent hailstorm that we will hardly forget soon, has destroyed the heart of the Côte de Beaune together with Burgundy producers’ optimism regarding the beautiful 2014 vintage potential.
From this date, the weather conditions throughout July and August were particularly marked by high humidity and cool temperatures (especially in August) … and then a miracle happened!!! From 1st September long awaited summer finally arrived. Thanks to dry, warm and sunny weather most grapes reached the desired maturity. Pinot Noir demanded great vigilance in choosing the optimal harvest date and required a very rigorous sorting. As for Chardonnay, patience paid off and it was picked when it reached an equilibrium between perfect maturity and excellent health.
We started harvests on Tuesday, 16th September.
Dark ruby red with luminous purple reflections. Beautiful red berries concentrate and dark berries, underlined by spicy notes. The palate is crunchy and savory with bright red fruits. Fresh, fine and spicy tannins.

There is a slight dustiness on the nose at first, although that seems to dissipate with time, even if it does remain rather broody and sultry. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip, supple tannin, good density here with very fine focus, just a little new oak to be subsumed on the finish, but otherwise this is a good proposition."Grade: 90-92 Points -

Reticent, slightly wild aromas of cassis, leather and game. Enters the mouth creamy with dark berry fruit but shuts down hard in the middle palate. Finishes very tight, even austere, with good length but serious tannins dominating in the early going."Grade: 87-89 points
