Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2013

Domaine Jacques Prieur

Terroir: 1er Cru Champans is one of the larger 1er Cru vineyards in the village of Volnay. The vineyard sits just west of the village on a rather steep portion of the hill and sees optimal exposure to the sun thoughout the growing season. Domaine Jacques Prieur owns a bit less than 1 acres on the upper slope of the vineyard.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 19 days prior to fermentation. The wine ages for a total of 17 months in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Additional Information

2013, The sky fell down on our heads!
What a little difference a year makes… After an arduous weather in 2012 we hoped for a serene 2013 vintage, but Nature decided otherwise!
Once again, vines, throughout the growing season and until the final maturity of the grapes, underwent all assaults of nature: long and grey winter, sullen and rainy spring, slow growth cycle, late flowering (second half of June) with coulure and millerandage and a month of July marked by violent hailstorms, especially the one on 23rd July in Côte de Beaune that has caused large crop losses (from 10% to 100 % depending on location). All these weather conditions gave way to a significant drop in production. Fortunately, warm, dry, sunny August and soft and slightly damp September allowed the small amount of grapes to mature by the beginning of October. Nevertheless, we had to remain vigilant and very flexible facing the botrytis development on Chardonnay. Picking began on 2nd October, confirming 2013 as a late harvest vintage.
The overall quality of the wines is not affected by these weather disturbances.

Intense ruby red. Berries with grains featuring flint notes. The palate is filled with spicy and fruity flavors with dense tannins.

"Here the nose is reduced and slightly woody though there is good freshness to the energetic, cool and intense medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality and salinity onto the dusty, balanced, complex and impressively persistent finish. The abundant dry extract imparts a velvety texture and buffers the moderately firm tannic spine and as such this could actually be enjoyed on the younger side if desired."

"Bright medium red. Reticent aromas of raspberry, minerals and menthol. Densely packed and uncompromisingly dry, but with nicely integrated acidity keeping the wine from coming off as austere. Finishes with good subtle length and firm tannins that seem riper than those of the Beaune Champs-Pimont."
    Grade: 88-90 Points
