Domaine Jacques Prieur - Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 2015

Overview

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is 1er Cru by choice only, as the fruit is entirely Grand Cru in turn creating a remarkable value from this top domaine.

Terroir: The Domaine Jacques Prieur Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru is sourced exclusively from the domaines young vines from within Le Chambertin Grand Cru itself. The domaine owns two acres of vines idealy located on the mid level slopes of the Grand Cru of Chambertin. Soil here is rich in organic material, mineral and clay and vines are old and very densely planted to encourage competition amongst the vines, limiting yields and producing fruit of great concentration.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must macerates in temperature controlled oak vats for 21 days. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Additional Details edit

2015 Exceptional sunshine!
The year 2015 profited from completely exceptional climatic conditions with surplus sunning, very weak pluviometry and very high temperatures in June and July. The strong luminosity and heat marked this year with accelerated vegetative cycle and certain stages such as flowering at the beginning of June and ripening at the beginning of August were fulgurating.
Harvests at Domaine Jacques Prieur started on 3rd September for Chardonnays and on 7th September for the Pinot Noirs.
2015 can be illustrated as an extremely early vintage and it stands next to 2003, 2007 and 2011.

Luminous ruby red. Generous showing floral, spicy and fruity notes at the same time (rose, clove and fresh cherry). Invigorating and dynamic with fruity-acidulous notes. Very digestible on the finish with structured, fresh and spicy tannins.

Graphite and spice notes seep into the edges of this cherry- and kirsch-flavored red. Piercing and persistent, with fine balance and a silky texture. Ends with a long, saturated aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2040.

(50% new oak; totally destemmed): Bright dark red. Blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a hint of dark chocolate on the slightly medicinal nose. At once smooth and juicy, showing moderate depth to the black cherry and mint flavors. This rather crunchy wine finishes with a touch of minerality but its serious tannins currently cut off the fruit. These younger Chambertin vines yielded a modest 23 hectoliters per hectare in 2015 but the older vines produced just 17, according to winemaker Nadine Gublin.
