Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2016

Domaine Jacques Prieur

Terroir: The large 123 acre vineyard of Clos de Vougeot is one of the most famous terroirs in all of Burgundy. Because of it’s vast size, this walled vineyard holds many micro-climates with many grade and soil variations.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 24 hours prior to fermentation. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Additional Information

2016, 26th-28th April: Devastating frost episode!
After a very mild winter and a warm spring weather in the second half of April, the bud break was advanced but the frost with high level or humidity at the end of the month destroyed the parcels with the best exposition. After the frost the vine was developing slowly. Acceleration in growth and the maturity of grapes were possible thanks to very warm and dry summer, with ripening that started quickly by mid-August. The harvest started on 20th September and the sanitary condition of the vineyard was perfect.
The overall quality of the wines is not affected by these weather disturbances.

Intense dark ruby red. Very tempting, precise, fresh red berries (cherry, cherry-stone), evolving into slightly toasted notes on the nose. The palate is tender, flavorful, fruity and fleshy (fresh cherry). Fine and digestible tannins on the finish.

"(from a 1.19 ha parcel of vines at the bottom of the slope; 30% whole clusters). Here too moderate wood along with noticeable menthol sets off aromas of cassis, pungent earth and a lovely hint of lavender. The sleek, vibrant and well-detailed medium weight plus flavors possess a highly attractive mouth feel before terminating in a solidly complex and lingering finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than usual though it is markedly firm. Patience required."

"The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was bitten by the frost so that from 1.5 hectares, only ten barrels were produced. It includes 70% whole bunches. It has a delightful, clean and precise bouquet that opens up with black cherries, violet, hints of blueberry and a subtle mineral undertow. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, nicely focused with impressive structure that lends this a more masculine personality than some of its peers. Very fine, classic Clos de Vougeot that is almost as good as the 2015."
