Domaine Jacques Prieur - Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2016
Terroir: Domaine Jacques Prieur farms just over a 1/4 acre of Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet, which is a sizable share of this heavily fragmented vineyard of just 18 acres. Chevalier-Montrachet sits high on the slope above neighboring vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet. Soils here are rocky and extremely well drained. This is hallowed ground for Chardonnay lovers.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 12-14 hours prior to fermentation. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

After a very mild winter and a warm spring weather in the second half of April, the bud break was advanced but the frost with high level or humidity at the end of the month destroyed the parcels with the best exposition. After the frost the vine was developing slowly. Acceleration in growth and the maturity of grapes were possible thanks to very warm and dry summer, with ripening that started quickly by mid-August. The harvest started on 20th September and the sanitary condition of the vineyard was perfect.
The overall quality of the wines is not affected by these weather disturbances.
Intense green gold with luminous silver reflections. Precise, refined with slightly toasted notes, evolving with aeration into fresh fruity notes (white peach, apricot). The palate is smooth texture and consistent palate embracing sapidity. Infinite length and very salivating on the finish.

"(from a .14 ha parcel). Very generous wood treatment stops just short of completely dominating the otherwise ripe white orchard fruit and citrus rind aromas. Somewhat curiously, the super-dense and powerful flavors are less elegant than those of the Combettes while displaying a borderline chewy texture on the borderline painfully intense but distinctly warm finish where an interesting hint of bitter orange peel zest appears. As the description suggests, this is pretty awkward at present and it’s not evident whether it will ultimately harmonize."

"The 2016 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, one of the smallest productions ever at a solitary barrel, has a tightly wound bouquet that is missing a little mineralité. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, hints of peach and dried apricot, quite conservative toward the finish with a touch of almond and a light sea spray influence. I would just like more complexity and personality here. I want it to sing of Chevalier-Montrachet!"

"Bright yellow. Expressive aromas of lemon zest, mandarin orange, peach, fresh apricot and crushed rock. Suave and fine-grained on entry, then rich and stylish in the middle, with flavors of white peach and smoked meat given shape by bright acidity. Nicely combines finesse and structure in the way of the best examples from this grand cru. Finishes saline, tactile and alive, with excellent drive. (Incidentally, the estate's vines in Montrachet were "massacred," according to Nadine Gublin, but Domaine Prieur will still bottle a small quantity of wine.)"
