Domaine Faiveley - Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018
Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.
Terroir: The hillside Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne is the largest of the white Grand Crus and the only one north of the city of Beaune. This large 175 acre vineyard occupies the top portion of the hillside above the red Grand Cru of Corton and spans between the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses in the south(west) to Aloxe-Corton directly below in the north. Terroirs vary significantly between the due south facing parcels of Pernand-Vergellesses and eastern exposures of Aloxe-Corton.
Domaine Faiveley owns a single 1.5 acre parcel of vines running west to east down the hillside in the northern portion of the vineyard directly above the village of Aloxe-Corton. Vines sit in soils of grey marl with a due easterly exposure.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. The grapes are cold fermented entirely in oak prior to aging in the cellars for 14-16 months in a combination of new and used oak. New barrels represent approximately 70% of the selection.
Additional Details editThe nose reveals oaky, fruity and floral notes. The palate is concentrated and well-balanced with excellent aromatic persistence. The rich aromas make this Grand Cru enjoyable in its youth although it only develops its full character after a few years of bottle age. An exceptional wine with depth and minerality.

"The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has much more delineation and complexity than the 2018 Champ-Gain, and I might actually prefer the aromatics here to the 2019. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and crisp, displaying fine salinity on the finish and a hint of brioche and white chocolate on the aftertaste. Enjoy over the next decade."

"Bursting from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, fresh pear, dried flowers, toasted nuts and fresh pastry, Faiveley's 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, lively and incisive, with good concentration and chalky structuring extract, concluding with a long, precise and mineral finish."
