- Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2017

Overview

Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.

Terroir: Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot sits on the lower slope within the village of Vosne-Romanee directly below the Grand Cru's of Le Musigny and Grands Echézeaux. One of the largest of Grand Crus; the 123+ acres are heavily fragmented, Domaine Faiveley owns 3.18 acres spread across multiple parcels.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. Following a short maceration the must undergoes primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The young wines are aged in 70% lightly toasted new oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.

Additional Details edit

Deep ruby red with complex fruity and floral notes (rose, violet) and a subtle hint of oak on the nose. The attack is smooth with powerful tannins. This well-structured and very persistent wine is an honour to the reputation of this exceptional Grand Cru.

"A sleek red, with well-defined cherry, floral, spice and earth notes aligned to a firm structure. This is reserved for now, with an expanding finish that emphasizes the oak spice and dark fruit elements. Best from 2022 through 2040."

"The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from a parcel that Erwan Faiveley candidly said is less consistent, at the mercy of the weather and dependent on a dry season. It has a charming, quite effervescent bouquet of raspberry and cranberry fruit infused with candied orange peel. A tangible sense of mineralité develops with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, displaying gentle grip, good structure and maybe a little more detail and tension than the Echézeaux at the moment. Good potential."

"The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers up a complex bouquet of smoked duck, dark wild berries, incense, dark chocolate and earthy spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with impressive depth and concentration at the core, supple tannins and a long, expansive finish. This is a serious Clos Vougeot."
