Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l’Ecu (Monopole) 2017

Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.

Terroir: Clos de l’Ecu was acquired in 2003 and is a monopole of Domaine Faiveley. The 5+ acre “Clos” or walled vineyard sits high on the hillside overlooking 1er Crus Les Bressandes, Les FEves and Les Perrières and the village of Beaune to the east. Soils are shallow, loose and laiden with gravel.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. Following a 18-20 day maceration the must undergoes primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The young wines are aged in 70% lightly toasted new oak barrels for 14 to 16 months.

Additional Information

This terroir offers a fruity and very elegant of the Pinot Noir varietal. It displays a deep ruby color and remarkably pure notes of red and black fruits. The palate is lively and spicy with a refreshing touch of menthol. This wine evolves beautifully in the bottle although its generous character makes it a pleasure to drink in its youth.

"This wine still shows bold tannins although its fruit suggests that plenty of richness will come. Its ripeness and strawberry fruitiness already hint at a powerful, delicious and full wine. Drink from 2023."

"This is a successful vintage for Faiveley's 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu Monopole, an expressive wine that offers up a generous bouquet of ripe cherries, raw cocoa and a nicely integrated framing of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny textured, with melting tannins and a fleshy but succulent core of fruit. This will offer a broad drinking window."
