Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils

Terroir: Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils owns a total of 1.25 acres of the Grand Cru Vaudésir. Vaudésir is located northwest of Les Clos and shares the same hillside terroir.

Vinification: Up to 40% of the final blend sees time in oak barrels. Typically just 10% of that is new oak, with the majority being two and three year old barrels.

Additional Information

Creamy and full-bodied, with hints of citrus zest, wet stone, and a touch of vanilla. The acidity here is bright and lively. On the palate, it is fresh and nicely balanced with lemongrass and a round mouthfeel that give way to the traditional mineral backbone found in this varietal. A beautiful mixture of fruit and structure.

Plump, with peach, apple and lemon flavors, accented by vanilla and toast notes. Firms up, delivering a laserlike finish and a long aftertaste that leans toward minerally details. Should be better in a year. Drink now through 2025.

Still a very young wine, this comes from the higher slopes of the sweep of Chablis Grand Cru vineyards. It is properly rich, permeated with intense acidity and a strong mineral texture. It has fullness, particularly in the ripe apricot, peach and lemon fruits that come together in the zesty aftertaste. Drink from 2022.

Vaudsir, along with Le Clos, sit atop most critics lists -- certainly mine -- of top Grand Cru vineyards in Chablis. To me, the wines from Vaudsir, in the hands of the best producers, combine power with elegance and epitomize the stature of Grand Cru classification. Christian Moreaus 2016 Vaudsir fits that mold perfectly. Adverse weather reduced their crop of Vaudsir in 2016 by half. But what they made was sensational. Riveting acidity highlight prominent flinty mineral notes that command your attention. This is the kind of wine where one sip makes you take notice and say, Wow.

A ripe but airy nose blends notes of petrol and mineral reduction with exotic fruit, ocean breeze and a hint of shellfish. There is more volume still to the opulently textured big-bodied flavors that also possess a beguiling texture on the clean, dry and focused finale. This is really quite good and should drink reasonably well early on if that's your preference.

The 2016 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is matured 100% in two or three-year-old barrels. Production was reduced by 50% this vintage due to hail. The bouquet is quite resinous at first with scents of lime flower and dried quince emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a crisp, lightly spiced entry. There is a sense of energy conveyed by this Vaudsir, although I would like to see more precision develop on the finish. Give this four or five years in bottle.

"(100% fermented in barrels; just six barrels made from 0.5 hectare, or 18 hectoliters per hectare): Medium yellow. Very ripe but reticent aromas of soft citrus fruits, yellow peach and hazelnut. Sweeter and more glyceral than the Blanchots (this wine fermented until the end of January) but also more refined in texture. Yellow stone fruits dominate, with the oak element contributing a captivating sweetness. This rather voluptuous grand cru nonetheless shows good tension and structure; it will need time in bottle to harmonize."
