Domaine Christian Moreau Père & Fils - Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2016
Terroir: Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils owns a total of 7.5 acres of this most famous of the Grand Crus of Chablis, more than any other producer in the region. Their primary parcel sits on the high portion of the hillside with a direct southeast exposure. With the steep grade, drainage of the kimmeridgien soils is quick leading to low yields of the densely planted vines.
Vinification: A sizable 40% of the final blend is aged in oak cask, although only a small percentage is new barrels. The oak contact is unobtrusive and is a testament to the sheer power of this Grand Cru.
Additional Details editAn incredibly complex and delicious Chardonnay that easily holds its weight against the great masters in Puligny, Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne. Muscular yet refined and finessed, it greets the nose with a hedonistic bou-quet of lush citrus, tart green apples, white flowers, fresh herbs and delicate yet pronounced saline minerals, all supported by just the slightest hint of toast. Laser-precise on the palate with zippy acidity and immaculate detail.Technical Details

"This has an array of fruits from citrus to white and yellow peaches. More tropical mangoes and papaya with wet stony mineral nuances follow afterwards. The palate’s very expansive and expressive, but it is pinned together with a core of bright fine acidity and a very concentrated rich serving of fruit flesh. Delicious now, but it will age well beyond 2025."

"Peach, yellow plum and melon aromas and flavors mark this round, vibrant white. Harmonious, lingering with tangy plum skin and lime notes. Drink now through 2024."

Benchmark Grand Cru Chablis, with haunting aromas of kelp and seashore. Very fine and poised on the palate, with delicate oak, finely toasty notes, and a long, dry, chalky and mineral finish.

This is a rich wine, even from the normally austere Les Clos vineyard. Minerality is here, but it is surrounded by sumptuous ripe white fruits that have intense youthful acidity. It is a great wine that needs to age further, so drink from 2021.

Once again moderate wood stops just short of overshadowing the pretty and well-layered aromas of rose petal, petrol, mineral reduction and white peach. The sleek and beautifully refined medium weight plus flavors exhibit more minerality and almost as much power that really comes up on the balanced, focused and strikingly long finish. This is a really impressive 2016.

The 2016 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos has a complex, quite charming bouquet with peach skin and nectarine notes, orange pith and a touch of smoke. I admire the delineation and focus of this les Clos. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, crisp and poised with a touch of spice on the linear, quite stern finish. It will require three or four years in bottle at least. Very fine.
