Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques 2016

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Terroir: Domaine Armand Rousseau’s holding of 5.5 acres accounts for 40% of the total acreage of this famed Premier Cru, which many believe is of Grand Cru quality and one of the finest Premier Cru vineyards in the entire Côte d’Or. The walled vineyard sits just up the hillside from the village, well within site of the domaine. Exposure is to the east allowing the vines to soak up the morning sun.

Vinification: Grapes are meticulously sorted as they arrive in the winery. Following a cool maceration lasting five-seven days the must travels by gravity into barrel where it will stay for the entire vinification process lasting typically 18-24 months. Each Armand Rousseau wine is bottled unfiltered.

Additional Information

It is a fresh terroir, very harmonious. The tannins are strong and well integrated, with dominant aromas of cassis and black berries. The wine is powerful and intense on the palate.

"The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is blessed with a bouquet of real pedigree: very complex mixture of red and black brambly fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petal aromas. The harmony and delineation is outstanding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, pliant tannins that lend this Clos Saint-Jacques symmetry and poise. Fresh and vibrant, it never relinquishes any of its breeding and tension. The finish is persistent and utterly captivating. Fabulous. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting."

"(from a 2.2 ha parcel raised in 80% new wood). Rousseau noted that the 2016 CSJ contains more fruit from the upper portion as the lower part was heavily affected by the frost. An elegant, pure and exuberantly spicy nose blends notes of essence of red berries with wisps of earth, lavender and a background hint of oak. The equally pure middle weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration along with the same intense mineral streak as the Ruchottes while delivering stunningly good depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced finish. As good as the Ruchottes is, and it’s first-rate, there is simply another dimension present here."

"The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques, where 20% at the bottom of the vineyard was lost to frost, nevertheless has a wonderful bouquet that blossoms in the glass, quite floral with wilted rose petals, minerals and vivid red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and a little bit more sinewy than previous years, with good density and vigor but perhaps not with quite the same precision as the Ruchottes on the finish. Perhaps this is one cru from Rousseau that is not quite up there with the 2015, but then again, this wine can produce miracle in bottle..."
