Citra - Niro di Citra Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2017
Overview
A combination of history, tradition and the uniqueness of the terroir. The name is related to the wine history of Abruzzo.
Montepulciano wine was once known as “Vino Nero” (“black wine” for its very deep red color). Documented back to Roman times, this explains the choice of a mosaic on the label. The reference is to the splendid black and white mosaics depicting the god Neptune and other mythological figures discovered in the Roman Baths in Vasto’sArchaeological Park in Abruzzo. Most notable for containing some of the largest and most important Roman mosaics found anywhere along the mid-Adriatic coast.
Terroir: Codice Citra sits on 6,000 hectares of wide territory that covers almost the entire province of Chieti, with a north-to-south extension of 80-90km, and for 40km from the sea to inland. It is a privileged spot where grapes ripen among Majella, Gran Sasso and the Adriatic Sea: a unique chance to exploit different and unique terroirs and microclimates, with the ideal temperature range for the ripening of grapes. Mountain airstreams and sea breeze grapes acquire different chemical and aromatic characteristics that are fundamental to the production of Citra's distinctive wines.
Vinification: The picked grapes are traditionally vinified by a long maceration of the skins at a controlled temperature. During the fermentation, the must is racked off and pumped over on the marc hat. The wine decants into stainless steel tanks completing the malolactic
process. Finally, it ages in wood barrels to enhance its organoleptic characteristics.
