Château Fuissé - Pouilly Fuissé Le Clos 2016


With the 1992 vintage Château Fuissé produced their single vineyard bottling from their Le Clos vineyard. This cuvée has become one of Pouilly-Fuissé's top selection with age-ability of the famous wines of the Côte de Beaune.

Terroir: This walled parcel directly behind the chateau contains soil of dense clay and has a perfect south/ southeast exposure. The vineyard is planted entirely to Chardonnay vines that average over 45 years of age.

Vinification: Château Fuissé Le Clos is barrel fermented and aged in the cool cellars below the chateau for 12 months. 80% of the barrels are new. The wine is is then moved to the state-of-the-art winemaking facility for clarification and bottling. Quantities are limited to under 500 cases a year.

Le Clos is extraordinarily rich with layer upon layer of ripe apple, pair, and spice. The finish is driven by mineral with a firm gripping acidity.

"Aromas of Meyer lemon, orange blossom, delicately musky peach, honeycomb and wheat toast introduce the 2016 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Clos, a full-bodied, multidimensional wine with terrific depth and concentration at the core, balanced by succulent acids and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. It's similar in scale to the Brûlées, but it's simultaneously more intense and more controlled; it's also the most elegant of the Château Fuissé's wines."

"(the monopole Le Clos surrounds the Chateau and winery; along with Les Brûlés and Les Perrières, but not the northeast-facing Les Combettes, it's slated to become a premier cru; aged entirely in oak barrels, 80% new): Bright yellow. Sappy aromas of peach, orange zest and spicy, vanillin oak. Densely packed, suave and fine-grained, offering very ripe, concentrated flavors of stone fruits, minerals and almond butter, plus a whiff of flowers. Best today on the complex, long finish, which displays building salinity. This vineyard features clay at the bottom, marl higher up, then limestone at the top, according to Vincent. The yield in 2016 was just 25 hectoliters per hectare."

"(from vines that face due east). Moderate wood can be found on the petrol, pear, apple and acacia blossom aromas that are trimmed in a hint of citrus rind. The succulent, dense and sappy middle weight plus flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the precise finish that is dry to the point that it flirts with austerity. Again, I suspect that some cellar time will help considerably in terms of adding flesh to the finish."
