Brut Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2009

Champagne Pol Roger

A favorite of many, the Brut Blanc de Blanc is one of the finest 100% Chardonnay Champagnes produced. This sparkling gem is only released in the finest of vintages.

Terroir This 100% Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from vineyards Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs.

Vinification: The must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediately after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept separate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.

Additional Information

The wine displays a pale yellow-gold color with delicate green glints and a remarkable effervescence in the glass. On the nose, the first notes are of pink grapefruit coupled with almond, imparting a delightful freshness and delicacy to the wine, which progressively yield to aromas of white flowers and apricot. On the palate, the texture is invigoratingly fresh and zesty, typical of this outstanding vintage.

The wine is harmoniously well-balanced and full-bodied. Initially flavors of green apple and citrus fruit prevail, however these give way to creamy aromas of butter and meringue, contributing to an overall impression of outstanding complexity. The finish is characterised by an enchanting vivacity and long-lasting aromas.

Holiday Gift Guide 2019: 8 Excellent Blanc de Blancs Champagnes -- "Has anyone ever had a bad Pol Roger? I think not. Hey, it was good enough for Churchill, so it’s certainly good enough for us mere mortals. And while many enthusiasts spring for the (more expensive) Winston Churchill cuvées, I still favor the house’s blanc de blancs. The 2009 vintage in particular is exceptional: It’s got enough acidity to cut through anything that’s too rich—without being overkill. The crispness of it also lends itself to pleasurable solo drinking at a leisurely pace without the need for any food. The Champagne can stand on its own. And in my book, that’s the mark of a very good wine—something you can enjoy sans comestibles if you so choose, while also being superb for pairing. (Also: Now is about the right time to consume the 2009 vintage.)"

"This is a blend of chardonnay from the grand crus of Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger. It developed a broad texture through long aging on the lees, the full ripeness of the fruit coming through in white-cherry notes and a lanolin richness. And yet it still feels clean, a firm presence of limestone acidity lending the wine a classical line."

"Crisp and minerally, this tightly meshed, linear Champagne layers flavors of mirabelle plum, biscuit, smoke, white cherry and pickled ginger on the lacy mousse. Racy finish. Drink now through 2030"

With fruit from the Cte des Blancs, this is a classic, textured, mineral-driven Chardonnay Champagne. Its bottle age gives a toasty edge to the crisp, lively grapefruit and bitter orange flavors. Well balanced, this impressive wine is still likely to improve with aging. Drink now, but, better, wait until 2020.

This has an air of ripeness with gently candied praline and grilled ripe peach fruits. The palate delivers lemon pastry and a smooth, custard-like texture. Really supple and fleshy. One to drink early.

A pretty, elegant and relatively cool nose (and particularly so for the vintage) is comprised by notes of citrus rind, green apple and plenty of yeast and brioche wisps. The 2009 vintage though is more evident on the palate as there is both excellent richness and density to the full-bodied flavors, and especially so for a blanc de blancs, that possesses a generous effervescence if not the sheer depth of the best in the range. With that said, this is still quite youthful and I would be inclined to cellar it for another few years first.
