Brut Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2008

Champagne Pol Roger

A favorite of many, the Brut Blanc de Blanc is one of the finest 100% Chardonnay Champagnes produced. This sparkling gem is only released in the finest of vintages.

Terroir This 100% Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from vineyards Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs.

Vinification: The must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediately after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept separate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.

Additional Information

The wine displays a pale yellow-gold color with delicate green glints and a remarkable effervescence in the glass. On the nose, the first notes are of pink grapefruit coupled with almond, imparting a delightful freshness and delicacy to the wine, which progressively yield to aromas of white flowers and apricot. On the palate, the texture is invigoratingly fresh and zesty, typical of this outstanding vintage.

The wine is harmoniously well-balanced and full-bodied. Initially flavors of green apple and citrus fruit prevail, however these give way to creamy aromas of butter and meringue, contributing to an overall impression of outstanding complexity. The finish is characterised by an enchanting vivacity and long-lasting aromas.

"Pol Roger remains Spurrier’s favourite champagne ‘by far’, he said, and you can see why in this sublime, benchmark Blanc de Blancs. 2008 was an outstanding vintage in Champagne, and this draws it fruit from grand cru vineyards. Pol Roger prefer a more reductive style of winemaking than some houses, and this has produced a dry, fine and deliciously complex fizz, packed with elegant yellow and white fruits, nougat and brioche. It's still young, with great acidity, poise and length, but it has just started to drink well and will age superbly. Drinking Window 2018 - 2035." - July 1st 2019 Issue

A mouthwatering Champagne, featuring a lively, lacy mousse and well-meshed flavors of baked peach, lemon curd and slivered almond. Drink now through 2028.

"Great elegance and finesse already on the perfectly brilliant and aromatic nose shows Pol Roger's 2008 Blanc de Blancs Brut, displaying white and stewed apples with fine citrus flavors and discreet chalky aromas. The palate is dense and citric, as if limes and lemons are squeezed on a chalky rock. The purity, power and intensity is as remarkable, as is the finesse and persistence of the bubbles, the mousse on the palate and the long, persistent finish. Dosed with seven grams per liter, this extraordinary Blanc de Blanc Brut tastes drier than the Rserve Brut, but reveals a perfect ripeness of yellow fruits. The finish is lovely aromatic and intense, but also clear, fresh, firm and absolutely stimulating. This is a great Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru villages of Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger."

"Pol Roger is a widely known and admired Champagne house, but at the higher end of their offerings, the famous Winston Churchill cuve gets most of the attention. Thats entirely understandable if youve ever been fortunate enough to taste that wine, but this vintage blanc de blancs bottling is sensational in almost every vintage in which Pol Roger chooses to make it, and Ive tasted 20 year-old examples that were still fresh while showing mind-blowing levels of complexity. This 2008 rendition seems capable of attaining that level of excellence when fully mature, but Id bet that not many bottles of it will reach old age, as it is already quite expressive and delicious. The aromas show perfect balance of yeast- and fruit-based notes, and that balance follows through on the palate as well. Neither overt nor austere, it is a beautifully symmetrical wine, and the mousse is quite energetic but still very fine in texture. A great wine, to be sure, and the only question is whether youd prefer it early on for all of the frothy fabulousness that it is showing at present, or whether youd trade that for the amazing intricacy that it is sure to show with additional ageing."

"A bright, citrusy version, fine and creamy in texture , with a subtle richness to the glazed apricot, black cherry, ground anise and pastry notes. Minerally finish. Drink now through 2028."
