Albariño Sobre Lias Rias Baixas DO 2014

Bodegas Castro Martin

Albariño ‘Sobre Lias’ (family estate selection) was first produced for the 2002 vintage.

Sobre Lias is sourced from the family’s El Pazo and Castrelo vineyards within the Val do Salnés sub-region of Rias Baixas. The vineyards sit at an elevation between 160-to-820 feet with plantings of 1,100 vines per hectare. Vines average 50-years old and are trained using the Pergola system to enhance air circulation and minimize any risk of disease. Soils here are sandy with a mixture of granite and quartz.

Vinification:Grapes are hand harvested using small baskets to avoid bruising of the grapes and are then sorted upon arrival at the winery. Following a gentle pressing the juice is fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, where it will remain, on its lees for 5 to 6 months. Wines are cold stabilized and gently filtered prior to bottling.

Additional Information

Made with selected grapes from prime vineyard locations, the Sobre Lias exhibits many fine, elegant qualities. With a distinct salty minerality on the nose, and an array of pure, clean, limpid white fruit aromas. The palate almost shimmers with tang and vibrancy, and although it has a steely precision, it is balanced by fruit with a peachy pear-like quality and backed by a vivid streak of lemon and mineral acidity.

From 50-year-old vines in Salnes, this wine aged for six months on its lees, developing an unusual combination of juicy pineapple flavor and stoniness. It’s nervous in acidity, tightening around the leesiness to create an intense, savage albarino. Far from the simple and creamy whites that populate Rias Baixas, this explores new territories, its full-on fruit flavors and mineral notes giving a deep and immersive complexity. You can drink it now with fried scallops, or cellar it for two or three years.
