Castello Monaci - Kreos Rosé Salento IGT 2018

"Kreos" taken from the greek, Eos, a figure of Greek mythology, goddess of the dawn, sister of Helios (the sun) and of Selene (the moon). As the story goes; every morning the goddess weeps inconsolably for the death of her son, killed by Achilles during the siege of Troy, and her tears form the morning dew. Homer called her the goddess with the rosy finger because of the effect seen in the sky at dawn.

Terroir: The Castello Monaci Kreos Rosato comes from the heart of Italy's rosé production region of Apulia. The vineyards of this hot, arid region are made up of dry gravelly soils of limestone and clay forcing the vines deep for nourishment and leading to very low yields and concentrated wines.

Vinification: This 100% Negroamaro is made in the "saignée method" which removes the juice from the skins after just a enough contact to impart a rich pink color and clean berry flavor. 45,000 bottles produced.

Additional Details edit

The 2018 Kreos is vivid pink in color and made in an elegant style. The bouquet is intense with fruit and spice flavors (rose, strawberry, blueberry and pepper with a good acidity). The wine is very well balanced.

"This saignée of Negroamaro offers pretty aromas of grapefruit, white flowers and strawberry on the nose. It is silken in feel, with creamy red fruit flavors, yet propped up by just enough acidity to keep it refreshing."

"Vivid dark pink. Aromas of pomegranate, peach and herbs. Then slightly sweet in the mouth with similar flavors to the aromas but strikes me as more balanced than the disappointing 2017 Rosato Kreos. Fresh and lively on the finish. 100% Negroamaro grown on clay and limestone rich soils. Made with the saignée method, a bleeding technique by which the juice is removed from the skins after minimal contact, just enough to give a deep pink color."
