Baron de Ley
Reserva 2001
Producer Background: Located on the 90-acre estate of a 16th-century monastery on the left bank of the river Ebro, Baron de Ley is unique in Rioja on several points: the bodega relies almost exclusively on fruit from its own estate; high quality Reserva and Gran Reserva are the focus of production; Cabernet Sauvignon is sucessfully blended with Tempranillo; and extensive maturation is used (the Bodega focuses predominantly on Reserva and Gran Reserva bottlings). Wine Type:
Dry Red
Grape
Type:
100% Tempranillo.
Country:
Spain
Region:
Rioja
Vinification:
Harvesting was by hand and the grapes were transported to the winery in low capacity trailers to guarantee they arrived in good condition. Once destemmed they were fermented in stainless steel tanks equipped with cooling jackets for 8 days at a controlled temperature of 30-31º. During fermentation the must was pumped over daily to achieve the maximum extract.
After several weeks resting in vats undergoing malolactic fermentation, the wine started its ageing in new American oak casks for 14 months. This stay in oak was further complemented and rounded with two and a half years in bottle before its release into the market.
Tasting Notes:
Intensely colored with ruby tones. Forward, wide open nose of ripe fruit and spice: red and black berries, mulled spice aromas. Bright, ripe fruit upfront on the palate, soft tannins, mild acidity. Spicy fruit lingers in the finish.
Food Match:
roasts, lamb, grilled meats, game, beef.
