Amarone 2004

Italy » Veneto » Le Ragose » Amarone 2004

Summary

Terroir: Le Ragose Amarone is produced from estate vineyards sitting above 1200 feet in elevation. The vineyards are ideally situated with a south-west exposure and soils of clay and magnesium, calcium and iron based gravel. Vines average 30-60 years old.

Vinification: Following harvest the grapes are laid out in single layers in small wooden boxes where they will slowly dry until January or February. Once dry, the raisined grapes are fermented for up to 30 days with indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks where they will stay for a period of 12 months followed by 4-5 years in large Slavonian oak casks.

Total Alcohol: 14.5%
Total Acidity: 6.5 grams per liter

Notes

Extraordinarily powerful, intense wine of 14-16% alcohol with a concentrated black cherry confettura (jam) fruit. Dense and super ripe, yet still well-mannered and harmonious, the Amarone finishes rich and dry with firm tannins allowing lengthy bottle development. Le Ragose is a benchmark of the type.

Blend: Corvina: 60%, Molinara: 20%, Rondinella: 20%

"After assessing this wine carefully over the course of two successive evenings, I didnt really need further confirmation of its excellence. However, that may be what I got from the fact that my new dog (Marco) singled out its cork from a big bin and gave it a good chomping before I could detect the misdeed. Marcos bad behavior is balanced by his good taste, as this wine is explosively expressive in both aroma and flavor, with endless intricacies including leather, spices, dried fruits and cured meat. Unlike many bottlings of Amarone, it is essentially dry, yet it is hardly austere. Very rich and persistent in flavor, it shows enough acidity and tannin to seem focused and balanced, yet the wines succulent texture accentuates the sense that this is deeply sinful stuff. Bad dog! But smart dog...."

The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a pretty, understated wine with lovely inner perfume in its sweet roses, raspberries, spices and licorice. The tannins remain fine and silky throughout, conveying an impression of elegance. The wine offers outstanding length as well as balance. The 2004 Amarone impresses for its superb drinkability and balance. Ideally this traditionally made Amarone is best enjoyed if opened an hour or two prior to serving.
