Pinot Gris 2006

France » Alsace » Hugel et Fils » Pinot Gris 2006

Summary

"Classic" Pinot Gris is one of the Hugel family secrets first released with the fabulous 2006 vintage.

This new release is from a drastic selection of the best grapes purchased from winegrowers under long-term contract in a dozen of the most favored localities in and around the village of Riquewihr and includes an sizable amount of grapes declassified from some Grand Cru vineyards of the Hugel estate.

The hand picked grapes were taken intact to the presses, filled by gravity, the must decanted for a few hours, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats with natural yeasts. The wine is the purest expression of the grapes, with a very natural and non-intervention vinification.

Notes

The color is pale pistachio green with straw yellow hints, young, bright and lively. It has a nice, fresh bouquet, non-aggressive, very floral jasmine, hawthorn, lime blossom and frangipane ? with smoky, woodland hints ? moss, fern, chanterelle and cep mushrooms. On the palate it is dry in character, with just enough acidity, a nice structure and balance, still a little closed on the finish but it will open out and become more expressive in the next 6 to 12 months, although its youthful fragrance is already pleasantly refreshing. Enjoy in 2 to 6 years with sea or river fish, eel, red mullet, crayfish, and white meat like veal and poultry. The vinification is perfect, not easy to achieve in a difficult vintage like 2006.

"a lovely medium straw-gold color with a faint green cast. Subtle aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle, quince and pear, crystallized ginger and a back-note of woody spices are woven with a strand of smoke and baked apple. In the mouth, the wine is satiny and mellow, slightly honeyed in aspect yet completely dry, with flavors of apple and nectarine and a hint of green grapes, all enveloped in a spicy, smoky haze that opens to a touch of barely mossy earthiness. The texture feels almost cloud-like, and the acidity, while lively enough for some vivacity, is soft and accommodating. What a treat!"

"The 2006 Hugel Pinot Gris is a vivid, fruit-driven wine from lively start to refreshing finish. The aromas tend toward floral and spice with a bit of earth in the mix. On the palate, expect this bone dry white wine to display a good show of power along with a fuller-body and delicious acidity. The fruit flavors of this Pinot Gris orbit around citrus and peach and make for solid pairing potential with the bird and beyond."

"I consider it very awesome that someone is making a lively & very non-flabby PG.

This wine will definitely come off as too racy and acidic for some, but the geekier among us will love the fact that theres a food-friendly PG out there that delivers oodles of tropical fruit aromas without turning into a flabby-ass alcoholic mess on the palate (PG lovers will know what I am talking about here)."

"Juicy and rich, with a hint of sweetness, this wine had just enough body to work with these sandwiches. Its ripe pear character seemed to enliven the match."

Charmed by Hugel's '06 Classic pinot gris, with self-satirizing Ralph Steadman label: apple-pie crust aroma and a dried-pear vein in flavor. A brass-colored wine of character and surprising depth. In Hugel, I expect to find, unfailingly, Old World class.

This wine is light and floral. A great choice if you are looking for a wine to pair with multiple dishes such as chicken, seafood, or veal. A nice balance and easy to enjoy for any occasion, would be perfect for a summer garden party.

The Hugel 2006 Pinot Gris smells quite nobly of truffle, along with a Gewurztraminer-like note of celery root, distilled pit fruits, and herbs. It comes to the palate soft yet juicy and with a surprising sense for the vintage of transparency to finishing nuances of herbs, mineral salts, and forest floor. This incorporates only the estates best fruit of the vintage, and should prove fascinatingly versatile at table, though I would plan on drinking it over the next couple of years.
