Summary
Chianti Classico Reserva La Selvanella is Fattorie Melini's top wine and is a benchmark for Italian wine. With its 1969 debut vintage Tre Bicchieri veteran, La Selvanella was the first wine made from a single vineyard in Chianti and among the first in Italy. Gambero Rosso has declared La Selvanella a “crowning glory” and “standard-bearer of the zone’s most traditional style”.
Terroir: The La Selvanella vineyard contains multiple parcels spread of 123 acres of hillsides within the commune of Radda, halfway between Panzano and Volpaia. Planted entirely to Sangiovese Grosso, the vineyard sits at approximately 1,300 feet in elevation with an ideal southerwest exposure. Soils are mainly alberese (weathered sandstone), limestone and clay.
Vinification: Harvest takes place in early to mid October with only the healthiest bunches being picked. The must is traditionally vinified with a long, cool maceration over a period of 20 days followed by an extended maturation of 30 months in French oak casks.

Notes
Chianti Classico Riserva La Selvanella 2006 has a clear, dark, ruby colour with garnet tints, a full, complex bouquet with strong notes of raspberry conserve and of irises and hints of vanilla, cinnamon and leather. The flavour is full, warm and savoury with an elegant and lingering aftertaste of woodland undergrowth and toasted almonds. It can be kept longer than usual, and improves with time.
Blend: Sangiovese: 100%
"Dried cherry and violets in the nose; classic fruit-and-leather complexity of the palate. A wine to cellar for a while."
Score: 90 Points
"Fresh and smooth with juicy plum and racy blackberry fruit; charming and pure with balance and fine structure."
"WINES SCORING AROUND 9"
The 06 Chianti Classico Riserva La Selvanella is its usual territorial self. The vines of Radda have produced a wine with a lively nose and elegant ripe plums, liquorice and cinchona. Its vivacious character foregrounds incisive tannins framed in good breadth and progression. We gave La Selvanella three glasses for its huge personality and concentration.
